Meet Kevin: Student who Returned to School with a New Heart

“It (HACC) has given me the opportunity to pursue my career in cardiovascular technology and to one day give back to the very community that saved my life.”

Previous life experiences can set the course of someone’s career path. This is evident for Kevin Poff, a cardiac sonography student at HACC’s Lancaster Campus.

In 2015, years after being diagnosed with a heart disease that put him in end-stage heart failure, Kevin received the gift of life – a new heart. He promised himself that if he made it through years of serious health scares and procedures, he would go back to school. Kevin said, “I researched cardiac sonography, which led me to the program at HACC. After reviewing the program and visiting the campus I was sold.”

He added, “With nearly a decade of heart patient knowledge, having been on most of the heart failure drugs, and still on a regimen of transplant drugs, I knew I wanted to do something in the cardiac medical field.”

Kevin plans to graduate in 2019 and would like to work at a hospital to give back to the community that saved his life.

In his Story Bank submission, Kevin gave a special shout out to Dr. Todd Allen. Kevin wrote that “he made anatomy and physiology even more fascinating with his engaging and impassioned lectures.”
