A first-generation college student is the first person in their family to attend college. At HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, we understand that the college journey can be confusing and overwhelming – especially when a student's family may not have experience with the process. Therefore, HACC proudly welcomes these commendable students with open arms and provides services and resources to help students every step of the way. 

One resource for students is scholarship opportunities available through the HACC Foundation (the nonprofit organization that supports the College) to help offset the cost of college. Scholarships make it possible for many students to complete their education - students who otherwise could not afford tuition. The #FirstGenHACCstudents project will establish a scholarship to specifically help first-generation college students at HACC and provide critical support for students like Michael. 

Michael's following words represent one of the many first-generation student stories at HACC.

"…in 2021 my family and I were adjusting to our new life in the United States during the 2020-21 COVID lockdown. HACC opened the door to achieving my dreams of being an outstanding professional in the field of communication.

HACC made me choose LIFE during a period of injury and pain following a serious work accident that prevented me from working and living a normal life for more than one year.

If it were not for this opportunity at HACC, my life would be empty and meaningless because I could not afford to pay for continued education.

HACC accommodated me at the point of every need. Further, prospects for future employment would be dismal and my quality of life uncertain.

HACC also provided stability to my family life, as we are all now hopeful that this journey will lead myself, my wife and daughters to a promising future. My life is better with HACC."
