Imagine going to work or applying for a job without being able to speak English. This barrier, one that holds individuals back from a better life, is faced by many members of our HACC community.
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Bridge to College Program will help prepare English-language learners to enter college.
This project will provide students with college exploration and United States acculturation, academic English language support and an intense summer ESL course in preparation to start HACC classes. Students will enter their classes prepared for academic work and be familiar with the culture, resources and systems of HACC.
The primary focus will be for:
- Immigrant and refugee high school juniors and seniors in HACC's 11-county service area.
- Those who first arrived in the United States during high school, as they have a difficult time learning the language without extra support.
- Individuals applying for the F1 international student visa, especially if their English fluency level will prevent them from being approved to study in the United States. These individuals could take this course remotely while still in their home countries, awaiting their visa applications to be processed.
English language skill allow students to obtain an education that can better their lives, rather than having to accept dead-end jobs.. Supporting this program will change destinies for students, their families and our community.
