About the Fund

Helping students overcome hardships such as food insecurity, housing insecurity and financial crises allows them to focus on their studies and complete their education. Their success improves the quality of life for themselves, their families and our community.

The Fund for Excellence for CARE (Consultation, Advocacy, Referrals and Empowerment) will create a CARE Center to help students by providing critical resources such as:

  • Providing groceries and access to mobile food pantries and food banks to combat food insecurities
  • Connecting students with existing emergency assistance funds to help them face unexpected financial crises
  • Making referrals to affordable services such as automotive repair, housing assistance and mental health counseling
  • Providing access to new or gently used clothing
  • Providing bus passes for students who do not qualify for transportation assistance

Impact

Within the first month of HACC launching the CARE Center in September 2020, 30 students contacted the CARE Center about housing insecurity and 28 students contacted the CARE Center about food insecurity. These remain the highest requests among HACC students.

Groceries on the Go – Between June and December 2020, HACC provided 1,401 bags of groceries to students. The pre-filled bags, valued at $10 each, were provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Grocery E-Cards on the Go – HACC is offering a more convenient way to help students in need of food – grocery e-gift cards! The HACC Foundation provided money to supply Walmart e-gift cards worth $25-50 for qualifying HACC students.

Grocery e-gift cards offer the following benefits for students:

  • Students can shop for food items based on their needs and dietary preferences.
  • Items can be purchased discreetly.
  • The process follows COVID-19 safety precautions.
  • Students can use e-gift cards at their convenience.
