“I think that many other people should take the opportunity because let’s face it – you don't get anywhere without taking chances.”

Cohen, a first-generation college student, said he wasn’t going to go to college, but after a “rough set of events” in his family and hearing about HACC, he changed his mind. He said, “I decided to start my line in my family of going to college so I can set up a repetition and pattern for the younger generation of my family to follow my footsteps to pursue something bigger.”

Now, Cohen is in HACC’s Wellness and Health Promotion Program. His goal is to own a gym and “be the best instructor I can be for my students.” He wants to offer a place that is not too expensive and “can help drive the youth in the right direction.”

Cohen said that the people he has met at HACC have helped him “see a new side of things that I never experienced.” He has met new friends and “set up a whole new foundation for myself.” His HACC experience has also introduced him to people from other parts of the world. “One thing that people don’t know about HACC is that they have…students in the area from all different cultures [and] ethnicities and it’s truly incredible,” he said. “It's opened up my mind to many things to pursue new goals and chase many new objectives.”

From ruling out college to soon being a college graduate and business owner, the trajectory of Cohen’s life has changed a lot. He reflected, “I think that many other people should take the opportunity because let’s face it - you don't get anywhere without taking chances.”
