“I wanted to accomplish my set goal so the end result would be my testimony.”
Verna knew she wanted to complete HACC’s Criminal Justice Program because, as a single mother working a full-time job, the College offered the most convenient option for her specific schedule.
However, the path wasn’t always easy. Between losing her brother and her best friend just weeks apart, someone attempting to steal her vehicle and going through a divorce, Verna encountered mounting difficulties that could have understandably put her goals on hold.
Verna didn’t let this get in the way of her education, though. “These life challenges broke me physically and mentally,” she said. “I woke up one day listening to a gospel song, ‘Gracefully Broken’ by Tasha Cobbs Leonard, and that was my motivation to push through my trials and tribulations.”
She continued, “I didn’t want anyone to feel sorry. I wanted to accomplish my set goal so the end result would be my testimony. As the old saying [goes], ‘There’s no testimony without a test.’”
As someone with anxiety, Verna also found comfort in praying before class each day. She also expressed gratitude for HACC’s accommodating program and how it helped her educational goals. “No matter what your current situation in life is, such as being a single parent, working full time or having a hectic life, there are resources and classes available at various hours of the day to fit your schedule.”
Graduating from HACC will be just the beginning for Verna. After graduation, she plans to transfer to York College of Pennsylvania to continue her education and pursue her dream career in forensic science.
