Public Safety Center History

We opened the Public Safety Center in 1988. We named it in honor of Senator John J. Shumaker. His vision, determination and commitment to community service were the catalyst for HACC's Public Safety Center.

The Public Safety Center stands as a lasting tribute to Senator John J. Shumaker. He devoted his life to public safety and the betterment of society.

Current programs and training

We offer a wide variety of training programs at the Public Safety Center. We provide this training for the following units:

  • Police
  • Fire
  • Healthcare
  • Emergency-service personnel

We also offer response and safety training for private industry and other organizations.

We deliver customized educational and training programs for most courses. We hold these programs at off-site locations. We use the Public Safety Training Center for on-site instruction. This 12-acre complex is located just north of HACC's Harrisburg Campus.
