"Silverpoint" is the technique of drawing with silver or other metals (such as copper or gold) on prepared paper. Though the technique predates the Renaissance, it is currently experiencing a revival, with many artists exploring its uses in contemporary art making. Schmidt regularly works in silverpoint, and has curated several exhibits of works done in this unique medium.
Charles Schmidt teaches drawing and painting at Tyler School of Art of Temple University. He was educated at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. In 1980 Schmidt became a member of the NASA art team, a group of artists commissioned by the space agency to document the space program. In 1986 he was commissioned by the United States Senate to paint a mural to memorialize the lost Challenger astronauts for the U.S. Capitol building. He has had numerous solo exhibitions both in the United States and in Europe. These include exhibitions of silverpoint drawing. His work is included in some fifty public collections and numerous corporate and private collections.
