Thanks to multi-media icons like Martha Stewart, people of this decade are putting a renewed emphasis on the home and things homemade. A variety of creative arts courses are offered year-round by the Lancaster Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College.

Calligraphy: The Art of Beautiful Writing will be offered at the Lancaster Campus of HACC on six Tuesdays, Nov. 1-Dec. 6, 6-9 p.m. Cost is $125.

This class offers an introduction to the art of beautiful writing with thorough instruction in the use of the broad edged pen. Students will learn to write both majuscule (capital) and minuscule (lower-case) forms. Also to be covered will be the use of color, italic handwriting and small projects.

Students should bring a "Flair" marker and lined notebook paper to the first class. Additional supplies ($25) will be needed and explained at the first class.

Bookbinding lets you create a book with your own cover on three consecutive Wednesdays November 2, 9 and 16 from 6:30 pm to 9 pm. Cost is $55. Also includes learning techniques for make a duble signature book, accordion book with a no-paste cover and binding individual sheets into a book. Participants will make a hard bound book cover and construct a "Clarkson Book."

Lampshade Design and Restoration will be offered on the Lancaster Campus of HACC on four Thursdays, Nov. 3-Dec. 1, 6:30-9 p.m. Cost is $80.

Participants will learn a new skill that is also an art, creating beautiful Victorian-style lampshades with materials readily available. They will learn to create beautiful period lighting or use the same techniques to make modern, traditional and even contemporary designs for fun or profit. They should bring a notebook, pen or pencil, glue gun, lampshade frame, and sewing needle to the first class where materials also may be purchased.

Knitting Beyond the Basics will be offered at the Lancaster Campus of HACC on six Mondays, Nov. 7-Dec. 12, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Cost is $95.

Participants in this class can join the many celebrities from Julia Roberts and Madonna to Bob Mackie and football great Rosie Grier as they learn how to read a pattern and work with circular and double-pointed needles to create a hat and a pair of socks, progressing to more advanced techniques.

This course is designed for the individual who already knows how to cast on, knit, purl and bind off. A supply list will be provided.

Basic Bead Stringing

will be offered at Beauty & the Beads in Lititz on Thursday, Nov. 17, 6-8 p.m. Cost is $20. This class will teach the beginner student how to string a necklace or bracelet using a variety of beads and how to use a crimper. Students may bring their own beads or purchase the materials at the studio.

A Christmas Bracelet class will be offered at Beauty & the Beads in Lititz on Thursday, Dec. 1, 6-8 p.m. Cost is $20.

Participants will create a bracelet out of red, white and green seed beads and a lampwork bead featuring a candy cane. There is a $10 materials cost.
