The board of trustees of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, approved a $3.5 million contract today for renovations at its new center at 2010 Pennsylvania Avenue in York. The contract was awarded to East Coast Contracting, Inc, of New Cumberland, PA.

Work began to remove existing walls and prepare the site began last month under a separate contract. The construction project is scheduled to begin over the next few weeks with completion planned in time for the beginning of classes in August.

"We're working against a tight timetable," said Jean Treuthart, York Center director, "but we're committed to the beginning of day classes at the new site when the new semester begins on August 22."

The college will be using a 40 thousand square foot portion of the building including 10 general purpose classrooms, science, allied health and computer labs as well as a bookstore. The initial construction will accommodate up to a thousand students.

"With further renovations and expansion- the building could accommodate as many as three thousand students," she said, "which would make York HACC's third largest campus."

The new center will build on its current base of classes and offer full degree, diploma and certificate programs in more than 20 majors including allied health, business administration, criminal justice, education and social and human services, Treuthart said.

HACC's college credits are widely accepted by colleges and university throughout the country. What's more, the college has formal transfer agreements with more than 40 colleges and universities in the region, including Penn State, Millersville and Shippensburg.
