Civility Statement

As civility ambassadors at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, we are committed to fostering a culture of respect, kindness and consideration in all aspects of life. Our mission is to promote understanding, empathy and collaboration by valuing diverse perspectives and treating every individual with dignity. We aim to build harmonious communities where mutual respect thrives through effective communication, emotional intelligence and inclusive practices. By leading with integrity and compassion, we strive to inspire others to embrace civility as a cornerstone of personal and collective growth, ensuring a more inclusive and peaceful society for all.

This statement aligns with the principles of civility training programs, which emphasize respect, empathy and constructive engagement to create positive societal change.

Civility Framework

HACC’s civility framework includes:

  • Community: Identifying and centering shared values, challenging power imbalances and honoring the diverse knowledge and experiences of our community
  • Cultural humility: Committing to self-reflection and self-critique, examining of one’s own beliefs and identities and intentionally engaging in learning from, with and about others
  • Historical consciousness: Recognizing past practices that shape the present and acknowledging critiques of civility and how they are used to silence minoritized groups
  • Healing: Pursuing individual and collective healing from historical, institutional and interpersonal harms through dialogic and restorative practice, which aims to strengthen relationships and connections within communities

 

Civility Initiatives

The mission of civility initiative is to strengthen community and interpersonal relationships at HACC. The work of civility supports the academic, diversity and well-being goals of the college through skill-building for civil discourse, conflict transformation and restorative practice.
