Placement Testing

Placement Testing


Students in the following categories do not need to take a placement testing. They will be eligible for enrolling in college-level math and English classes.
 

Math Exemption Criteria*

  • High School Algebra II grade of B or better
  • High School GPA of 3.0 or greater**
  • SAT > 530
  • ACT > 21
  • GED > 175

*Scores active for five years; eligible for MATH 100, 103, 104, 111, 113, 114 and 202

**HS GPA is valid from half-way through senior year or final transcript
 

English Exemption Criteria*

  • High School GPA of 3.0 or greater**
  • SAT Evidence-Based Reading & Writing (ERW) or Critical Reading > 480
  • PSAT > 450
  • ACT Reading > 18 and ACT English > 21
  • Transfer in at least 12 credits of college coursework

*Scores active for 10 years; eligible for ENGL 101

**HS GPA is valid from half-way through senior year or final transcript
 

Students who do not meet the exemption criteria in math will take the placement test using a link sent to their HAWKmail account for the ALEKS placement test. ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning (PPL) is designed to measure a student’s math foundation, allowing for review and refreshment of math skills. Students who do not meet the exemption criteria in English are eligible automatically to enroll in English 003 (reading) AND English 051 (writing), OR English 057 (integrated reading and writing). Students may also schedule a Zoom-proctored placement test with the Test Center to test out of developmental English.
 

How do I submit a high school transcript or SAT, ACT, GED score report?

High school transcripts or score reports may take up to 5 days to be evaluated for placement and may be submitted in one of the following ways:

  • Mailed to:

    Harrisburg, PA 17110-2999
     
  • Emailed to admission@hacc.edu 

 

How do I know what math courses I need to take?
Math courses are determined by your desired major/program. Please speak with an advisor about your Math Pathway and course selection. View the ALEKS PPL Score Interpretation here! (pdf)

How can I prepare for the First Year Seminar test-out exam?
Students interested in testing out of the 1-credit First Year Seminar should use the "On Course" textbook for preparation, available at most bookstores. Additionally, a set of flashcards is available free online. Students should also be familiar with the OnCourse principles, outlined here.
