Harrisburg Area Community College may award, upon the recommendation of the President and resolution of the Board of Trustees, the honorary degree of Doctor of Public Service (D.P.S.) to outstanding community leaders on the basis of meritorious service and contributions to society. (College Policy 736)
A. The following individuals will serve on the Honorary Degree Award recommending committee:
Chief Academic Officer (CAO)
A Dean appointed by the President
Two faculty appointed by Faculty Council
Two classified staff members appointed by the Classified Employees Organization
B. The CAO will be responsible for chairing the committee. The committee will make its recommendations to the President who will in turn make recommendations to the Board of Trustees.
C. When selecting individuals who have rendered meritorious service, the following criteria shall be considered:
- Significant cultural and humanitarian services to the community.
- Significant contributions to Harrisburg Area Community College
- Significant contributions in any of the following: education, scholarship, arts, sciences, or technology.
- Significant leadership in any of the following: business, industry, public service, or civic and community affairs.
D. The names of individuals who are awarded honorary degrees are displayed appropriately at the College.
E. Honorary degrees are awarded at commencement exercises as determined by the Board of Trustees.
F. Honorary degrees may not be awarded to former trustees, administrators, or faculty members until at least one year after association with the institution has elapsed.
