Emergency Medical Technician Certificate - Non-Credit (0002)

  • Healthcare organizations

This 254-hour course serves as the foundation for emergency medical services, teaching you the overall roles and responsibilities of an EMT. The course prepares you to:

  • Rapidly assess injuries and illnesses
  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Identify and treat shock
  • Control external hemorrhage
  • Provide care of musculoskeletal injuries
  • Manage various medical emergencies, which may include; pediatric, environmental, diabetic, heart attack, strokes, seizures and breathing difficulty as a few examples.
  • Properly lift and move patients
  • Use an AED to perform automated external defibrillation
  • Rapidly assess the scene for hazards
  • Determine the most appropriate method to transport patients to the emergency department

Future students must meet the following criteria to enroll in the course.

  • Candidates must be at least 16 years of age on the first day of class.
  • It is not a requirement of the HACC certification program to have a GED or a high school diploma; however, some employers require it upon hiring EMT-certified personnel.
  • Reading and writing skills must be at, or above, a ninth grade level.
  • You must be able to lift, carry and balance a minimum of 125 pounds equally distributed (250 pounds with assistance), at a height of 33 inches and for a distance of 10 feet.
  • Academic and attendance requirements must be met for successful program completion.

After completion of this course, you may attend a Pennsylvania Department of Health/National Registry of EMT’s psychomotor exam and the National Registry of EMT’s cognitive exam, which will result in EMT certification through both of these agencies.

The EMT course may be used as a free elective toward specific associate degree programs at HACC.

Upon completing your certificate, you can continue your education and earn an associate degree at HACC! Our healthcare programs, among others, may be of interest.

When you complete your associate degree, you can transfer your credits to a four-year school if you wish.
 

Classes are available at our Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster and York campuses through on-campus/in-person instruction. You may also complete this course at our Gettysburg, Harrisburg and York campuses through various modalities (e.g., on-campus/in-person instruction, hybrid, synchronous remote instruction and/or asynchronous instruction). Classes are also available other sites across the state.
