“HACC also is helping me achieve my goals and dreams so my kids can be proud of me.”
Marie, a theatre student, chose HACC because it is close to her home and provides flexibility. She has a teenage daughter and a young son with autism. Marie said that being close to home helps her get her son to therapy appointments on time.
Her future plans are to stay in theatre and work as an actor, special effects makeup artist, voice over artist and set designer. She said she has been inspired by the professors in HACC’s Theatre Department. One professor “made me want to challenge myself and do my best all the time.” Another professor’s teaching “not only helped me to become an actor, it taught me how to stay in the moment to be present and mindful.”
Marie said that HACC has made her life better by opening doors and giving her skills to become more of an active listener. “HACC helped me become more organized in my work and my daily life,” she added.
For years, Marie and her family faced many serious challenges, including domestic violence, depression and health complications. Marie has not let it change her ability to be understanding and compassionate. She said, “I learned patience. I understand now there is a process to becoming the person you want to be in life and I give myself permission to let it happen and not force it.”
