“I realized how much support I had in front of me, and that made me love HACC even more.”
As a busy mother of three, Amber was looking for a way to do something good for herself while also prioritizing her children. Always helping and doing things for others but never feeling appreciated, Amber felt that going to school would guide her, especially after she faced difficult health challenges.
“After [having] my three-year-old, I went through postpartum depression,” Amber said. “I had to heal and going back to school helped me feel good about myself. I thought that I would never get back to life or do for myself again.”
She continued, “I became a CNA, and when I moved to Harrisburg in 2023, I started working for UPMC and signed up for college.”
Any nervous feelings that Amber may have had enrolling in HACC’s Nursing Program were eased after she continued to explore all the resources the College offers.
“I overcame [anxiety about] going back to school by visiting the library to complete assignments and walking around campus, talking to other students and joining groups,” Amber said.
“I appreciate the diversity, groups clubs and leadership,” she continued. “I realized how much support I had in front of me, and that made me love HACC even more. Now, I feel like I did the right thing to go and inspire others on their journey.”
Amber added, “People should know that HACC has great professors who really take the time to help you. There are lots of programs within the college who support mothers going back to school.”
Looking to graduate in 2026, Amber plans to work in forensics at UPMC after earning her credential. Additionally, she’s planning to help her son start preparing for college at a university – or HACC!
