Alyssa’s journey to HACC was full of challenges to conquer. From balancing multiple high school jobs to overcoming multiple scholarship rejections, Alyssa did not know if she would even be able to go to school.
“I had one job during the school year, and during the summer I worked 3-4 jobs,” said Alyssa, who is studying computer information systems. “I was exhausted by the end of it, and I was upset that I didn’t even get to hang out with friends.”
She chose HACC for its affordability and its distance learning options. “I can work on school anytime I want during the week. I don’t have to worry about driving to campus at a specific time, which helps me balance school, work and other responsibilities that I have.”
Alyssa did not always picture herself in college. “I thought I would be one of those students who would flunk out of college,” Alyssa said.
Instead, a high school teacher of Alyssa’s taught her that failure is a part of life, which helped Alyssa believe in her own success. Even though financial aid helped Alyssa get her foot in the door, her determination and positive attitude toward failure and learning is what helped take her dreams to new heights. In her first semester at HACC, Alyssa made the Dean’s List and was awarded two scholarships.
Alyssa’s story encourages students to believe in their own skills to make their college dreams come true.
