“I wanted a cheaper way to get an education. Plus, HACC has several good transfer partners.”

Alanna, who is majoring in biology, was drawn to HACC for several reasons, including the College’s affordability, accessibility and transfer opportunities.

“I wanted a cheaper way to get an education. Plus, HACC has several good transfer partners. Commuting is difficult but I'm grateful that the bus system takes me straight to the school,” she said.

As a first-generation college student, Alanna has overcome a few challenges to pursue her degree but has gotten by with the help of her friends and HACC’s student support services. “I got familiar with the different support systems that HACC has. I also have friends attending with me so we go through the same things together.”

She added, “My parents have separated so I've been living with my mom and younger brother with not a lot of money coming in although my dad helps out. I think the familial and financial struggles have made me more conscious of my decisions and I think things through more. Especially when it comes to money.”

After HACC, Alanna plans to transfer to a four-year institution to become a wildlife biologist.
