Accreditation and Middle States

Harrisburg Area Community College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and is currently preparing for the Reaccreditation Review in 2018. The most recent Middle State Commission action was to accept a Progress Report on June 23, 2016 and noted that the next evaluation visit is scheduled for 2017-2018.

HACC’s Middle States Reaccreditation Self-Study Team Visit – March 18-21, 2018

From March 18-21, 2018, an eight-member Middle States team will visit HACC to review the College’s compliance with the Middle States Accreditation Standards and Requirements of Affiliation. Guided by the Colleges Mission, the team will review HACC’s Self Study report, supporting documents, and meet with students, faculty, trustees, and various college personnel. The criteria for the Self-Study and the team review are documented in the Middle States Accreditation Standards and Requirements of Affiliation, which include:

Standard 2: Ethics and Integrity
Standard 3: Design and Delivery of the Student Learning Experience
Standard 4: Support of the Student Experience
Standard 5: Educational Effectiveness Assessment
Standard 6: Planning, Resources, and Institutional Improvement
Standard 7: Governance, Leadership, and Administration

Harrisburg Area Community College has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) since 1967. Accreditation is important because:

  • It ensures that education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality
  • Officially accredited institutions can offer eligible students federal student loans and grants
  • Only credits from accredited institutions can be transferred to another accredited institution of higher education.
  • It provides a means for self-reflection and continuous institutional improvement.

Middle States conducts ongoing evaluations of accredited colleges to ensure that the institutions are meeting the accreditation standards. The evaluation process is continuous; however, once every eight years it requires a self-examination (Self-Study) which culminates in a four-day campus visit by a team of peer reviewers.
