HACC Features "Faces of China" Photography Exhibit

May 4, 2006
"Faces of China: A Photographic Journey" is the theme of the current exhibit at HACC-Gettysburg Campus. The exhibit includes 100 photographs taken by Shawn and Dave Warnick during a study tour of China sponsored by HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College. The photography exhibit runs through Thursday, May 25 and is open to the public.

Shawn Warnick, a HACC student, and Dave Warnick joined a tour group of seventeen students accompanied by professor Xiaoquing Zhu. The group departed for China in June of 2004 and traveled through Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Suzhou and the Yellow Mountain area of Huangshan. They visited Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Sacred Way, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the army of Terra Cotta Warriors, and the Great Wall of China.

"The summer study tour presented a unique opportunity to experience the art and culture of China," said the photographers. "We explored the Yonghe Buddhist Monastery, Ming Gardens, and several museums as well as the streets of the towns and cities where the true personality of each city was revealed. Tours included a jade factory, a terra cotta factory, silk production, pearl harvesting and rug manufacturing facilities."

"We enjoyed Chinese opera and traditional music and searched out the splendors of Chinese history and arts. We walked the breathtaking area around Yellow Mountain. The sea of clouds engulfed us as we truly understood Chinese painting. In China you are not an artist or poet until you have walked the Yellow Mountains."

The Warnicks described their exhibit as "a window into the sights and wonders of China as experienced on this tour. We hope it will inspire others to follow our journey." All photographs in the exhibit are available for purchase.

Exhibit hours for the "Faces of China" exhibit are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Friday hours are 8 am to 5 pm until May 12, and 8 am to 12 noon beginning May 19.

The HACC-Gettysburg campus is located at the North Gettysburg Center, 731 Old Harrisburg Road, near Weis Markets and Adams County National Bank. For information, call 717-337-3855.
