Rapidly growing insurance industry partners with HACC's Lancaster Campus to train

Sept. 3, 2004
As local insurance companies find it hard to fill open positions, they have turned to the Lancaster Campus of HACC - central Pennsylvania's community college - to help. Beginning this fall HACC is offering a new non-credit course that covers the basics of property and liability insurance.

Rick Rankin, COO for Murray Insurance Associates, Inc., Lancaster, and one of the course's presenters, believes the course is an excellent way to acquaint people unfamiliar with the industry to the career options available.

"The industry is growing at such a rate that we cannot find the qualified people," said Rankin. "We want people to know how the industry operates on both the agency and company side and understand the opportunities available.

The people who can benefit most from this class are those who aren't already in the industry-the empty nesters, those looking for a career change, and new college graduates," he said.

Beginning September 21 and ending on October 26, the course will be offered on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost, which includes the textbook, is $129.

Introduction to Property and Liability Insurance is the same course many insurance companies use to teach their employees. But, instead of traveling to a distant location, participants can complete the class locally in six evening sessions.

The course - which is led by insurance professionals - teaches basic terms and concepts, using real-world settings and examples.

The Insurance Institute of America (IIA) developed the course curriculum. Participants will take the Insurance Institute of American national examination at the end of the course to earn the INTRO certificate of course completion.

The Lancaster Campus will hold an Open House on Thursday, Sept. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. for anyone interested in learning more about the non-credit course and for the opportunity to meet the instructors. To register, call the Lancaster Campus at 717-358-2901.
