Gettysburg Campus offers Excel and Access computer classes

The Gettysburg Campus of Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) will offer computer classes in Excel and Access this spring.

Excel 1 and Excel 2 and Access 1 and Access 2 will be offered in several different day and evening sessions.

Daytime and evening classes will be held at the Gettysburg Campus of HACC, 731 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg. An evening class also will be held at Emory H. Markle Intermediate School, 325 Bowman Road, Hanover.

April class start dates can be found in HACC's Spring 2004 Noncredit Course Schedule available at www.hacc.edu/gettysburg.

Excel 1 teaches students how to get started on Microsoft's powerful spreadsheet program. They will learn to create, modify, format and print spreadsheets. They will learn to work with basic formulas and functions, and use styles and AutoFormats to enhance their worksheets.

The class also covers finding and replacing data, and using templates. Prerequisite is Windows Introduction or similar experience.

Excel 2 teaches students to create dynamic charts using Excel. They will learn the benefits of naming cells and ranges. They will work with multiple worksheets and use more advanced functions, formatting and printing options. The class also will teach students how to import and export data, protect workbook data, use AutoFilters, consolidate data, and save workbooks as Web pages.

Prerequisite is MS Excel Part 1 or similar experience.

Access 1 teaches familiarity with Microsoft's widely used database program. Students will first learn the concepts, then chose data types, set field properties, and create tables to store data. They will learn to use queries to extract information, forms to facilitate data entry, and reports to publish data. Prerequisite is Windows Introduction or similar experience.

Access 2 teaches students to create a truly relational database by relating tables and joining queries, then use lookup fields and subforms. They will learn to work with input masks and validation rules and create calculated controls.

Students will use advanced queries, including parameter, crosstab, and action queries. They also will learn how to import and export data and create data access pages. Prerequisite is Access 1 or similar experience.
