Automotive Technology Training

HACC offers training and testing for individuals aspiring certification to inspect vehicles in accordance with regulations established by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

This is a one-hour testing session designed for students to demonstrate that they meet the requirements to conduct Pennsylvania’s state safety document reviews and process reconstructed vehicle titles. $40 (Cost is subject to change).
 

What can I do with Pennsylvania enhanced vehicle inspection in the workforce?

Upon successful completion of the examination, students’ records will be forwarded to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), along with a recommendation for certification. This certification is issued by PennDOT, not HACC. Students will then be issued their safety inspection identification card. They cannot perform enhanced inspections without this card.

The safety inspection training course informs students of the regulations, procedures and requirements concerning Pennsylvania’s safety inspection of vehicles. This course also provides the opportunity to complete the state certification exam for Pennsylvania safety inspections. This course is for cars and light trucks only. Additional categories require additional tests and fees. A valid driver’s license is required for each category of testing. $220 (Cost is subject to change).
 
If a student lives out-of-state, please note the following:

  • They must provide their out-of-state address and driver’s license information.
  • A copy of the out-of-state driver’s license must be provided to and approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) prior to testing.
  • If they are a Pennsylvania resident and they still possess an out-of-state driver’s license, they must surrender their out-of-state driver’s license and obtain a Pennsylvania driver’s license.
  • Additional information may be found on PennDOT’s website or by contacting the Customer Call Center at 800-932-4600.

What are HACC’s classes like?

This 12-hour program leads to safety inspection mechanic certification by PennDOT. Classes include:

  • Classroom instruction
  • Special category instruction
  • Tactile examination
  • Tool clinic
  • Written examination

The learning outcome is to train students to successfully inspect a vehicle and determine if the vehicle meets safety requirements.

This course prepares automotive technicians to become certified emissions inspection technicians. $200 (Cost is subject to change).
 

What can I do with emissions inspection certification in the workforce?

Students will be able to identify, describe and perform a visual and on-board diagnostic (OBD) II vehicle test according to the guidelines of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). Students should be able to identify the requirements and procedures for vehicle emissions testing for various regions of Pennsylvania.

What are HACC’s classes like?

This 16.5-hour program leads to emissions inspector certification by PennDOT. Classes include:

  • Classroom instruction
  • Computer-based testing
  • Demonstrations on dynamometer gas analyzing and OBD II equipment
  • Pennsylvania emission inspection and maintenance program rules and regulations
  • Written examination

Students’ test results will be forwarded to PARSONS, Inc. for grading. Students will then be issued their inspector certification identification card. They cannot perform emissions inspections without this card.

Inspector certification is valid for two years. Students will then be required to take a recertification course to maintain their certification.
