Meet Tammy: First-Generation College Student

It will be such a thrill to receive my diploma as the first college graduate in my family!

In October 2016, we interviewed Tammy Winand and asked her to tell us what she values about HACC. Here is Tammy’s story in her own words:

“I graduated from high school in 2002 and never considered going to college. No one in my family ever attended, and I always assumed I couldn’t afford it. Over the years, I held a variety of jobs, including retail and factory work but was never really satisfied. Meanwhile, a friend was attending HACC and kept encouraging me to apply, emphasizing that the tuition was extremely reasonable. It wasn’t until I found myself unemployed that I realized I needed a career I could count on.

I started classes at HACC in fall 2011 at the Gettysburg Campus and found that, aside from being cost-effective, the school offered so many opportunities.

After my first semester at HACC, I made the decision to pursue nursing. I always wanted to have a career where I would focus on helping people, and nursing is a perfect fit!

When I learned about all the scholarship options available for HACC students, I took my chances when applying in hopes of receiving support. I was awarded the Jennifer Weaver Scholarship and was completely surprised, as I didn’t think I deserved such an honor. Jennifer Weaver was a HACC administrator who started Survivors, Inc., an abuse prevention center and shelter in Gettysburg. I was deeply moved to be recognized by an award that celebrates the memory of someone so admired in the community. This honor made me realize that I was worthy of receiving such a meaningful award.”
