“Keep an eye on your children’s online activities and give them chores around the house.”

Evelin Schwartz, systems administrator, telecommunications

  • What do you do at HACC?
I manage and support the phone system collegewide.

  • How old are your children?
My oldest is 16 and my youngest is 9 years old.

  • How are you effectively juggling your professional duties and your personal duties of having your children at home while you work?
    • It has been very hard keeping up with my kids’ school communications and activities while I am needed by many people from my work to fix phone-related issues and many other things.
    • My husband is a respiratory therapist and he works longer hours at a hospital. He does what he can when he is at home. Over the last few days, I worked longer hours trying to get caught up with emails and work tickets. To me, the key to success is to stay focused and organized and to complete something every day.
    • I enjoy what I do and I feel excited how technology is helping people in this emergency situation.

  • What tips (things to do and things to not do) would you offer to other parents who are struggling with this?
    Stay calm and positive.

  • Is there anything else you would like to share that we did not ask?
    • Keep an eye on your children’s online activities.
    • Give your children chores around the house.
    • Read a book to them.
    • Prepare healthy meals for them.
