 Lebanon, Pa.

“Finding a new career that I could physically perform and enjoy was a challenge.”

As a disabled veteran, Antonio Cruz’s decision to explore a new career path was shaped not only by interest but by what he could maintain long term.

“Finding a new career that I could physically perform and enjoy was a challenge,” he said.

Antonio was referred to HACC’s Military and Veterans Affairs Office by his VA Office of Vocational Rehabilitation representative and enrolled in the Phlebotomy Technician program. He said the structure of the program and the clarity of the coursework helped him stay focused and confident as he moved through training.

“The classes and curriculum were well presented and organized, and the instructor was extremely knowledgeable and provided excellent information,” he shared.

Affordability also played a key role in his decision. Antonio said HACC made it possible to pursue job training without adding unnecessary barriers.

After completing the program, Antonio began working as a phlebotomist and lab technician at WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital. His work includes both inpatient and outpatient lab services, as well as nursing home blood draws.

When asked what advice he would give to others considering a similar path, Antonio emphasized the importance of being informed before committing.

“Take the time to ask questions before deciding on a major,” he said.
