The Kalman Mecs Student Award

Each year in an effort to promote and recognize outstanding talent in mathematics, the Pennsylvania State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (PSMATYC) is pleased to recognize one student in a community or two-year college as the recipient of its student award.  Any student wishing to be considered must satisfy each of the following criteria.  The student must:  

• Be a full-time or part-time student in a community or two-year college in Pennsylvania.

• Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above (based on a 4-point system).

• Have all college-level mathematics grades of A or B.

• Have completed a minimum of eight credits in college-level mathematics courses.

• Have earned grades of A in both Calculus I and Calculus II.

• Have completed at least 30 credits at a community or two-year college.

• Plan to complete a degree in mathematics, math education, engineering, or an applied mathematics curriculum.

• Submit a college transcript. 

Any applicant satisfying the above criteria and wishing to be considered for this award must submit a written application, a transcript, and at most two double-spaced standard typewritten pages in which the following areas should be addressed: 

• Career objectives

• Activities, including work experience

• General philosophy of education

• Any other information that may be helpful in making a decision 

Awards will be made at the annual PSMATYC conference and the student selected will receive a plaque, a check for $100, and may be awarded travel expenses up to a maximum of $50.
