I hope all our
members are having a wonderful Spring semester 2008. Teaching mathematics,
especially in our community colleges, is very rewarding. Every time we make a
comment on students’ home works or tests, we are making a difference in students’
learning. We emphasize the natural and logical reasoning in solving a
mathematical problem. Teaching is a difficult job. We try our hardest in
some of easiest materials. We constantly search for a better way to teach, use
technologies, use online resources, make students’ learning fun and portable;
and how is my colleague doing? What are my officemates doing? What works and
what not. What and how are our mathematics instructors doing in community
colleges across Pennsylvania, across the country? How do we connect with the
secondary schools’ teaching of mathematics? Perhaps a great way to get
mathematics professionals together is the annual statewide PCTM/PSMATYC
conference in November; I hope and encourage all our members to participate.
Also the annual national AMATYC conference, it will be held in our backyard, in
November in Washington, D.C. You certainly wouldn’t want to miss these state
and national mathematics conference opportunities.
We are offering early admissions to high school students to take college level mathematics courses. With the increasing popularity of Cyber and home schools, in fact Pennsylvania is a leader in Cyber school education in the country; I believe community colleges could attract many of these students to take College level courses. That’s a growth area for us.
We need your input and contributions to this organization. I wish you continued success in teaching mathematics to our students.
All the best;
Qingshou Kong, Ph.D.
President of PSMATYC
