The Kal Mecs Student Award Committee is pleased to announce that the 2008 winner of the Outstanding Student Award is Josiah D. Brehm of Penbrook, PA, a student at Harrisburg Area Community College.  Nominated by Professor Pauline Chow, Josiah impressed the selection committee with his high quality performance in mathematics courses taken at HACC as well as his well-worded essay, discussing his philosophy of education and his future mathematics plans upon transferring, possibly to Lebanon Valley College.

This award is presented annually to a full-time or part-time student majoring in mathematics, mathematics education, engineering, or an applied mathematics curriculum as a full-time or part-time community college student.  The minimum credentials call for at least a 3.5 cumulative average with at least 30 credit hours earned, including A's in both Calculus I and Calculus II.

This year's judging was certainly competitive, making the decision an especially difficult one, and frankly the committee would hope for the same kind of difficult decision next year!  All members of PSMATYC are encouraged to be on the lookout for possible nominations for the 2009 award.

Under normal circumstances, the Kal Mecs Award is presented at the annual PSMATYC meeting.  However, now that our organization meets in the fall rather than the spring semester, a decision is being made by the Executive Board how to handle this and future award presentations.  The Kal Mecs Award is named in memory of the long time treasurer of PSMATYC, in recognition of his faithful service to our organization.
