Task Force Recurring Themes

Based on feedback provided by internal and external stakeholders thus far, here are the recurring themes about the need to be more efficient and effective:
  • Too many administrators/layers
    • Reduce redundancy
    • More administrators create less efficiency
    • Too many VPs and Academic Deans
    • Too many campus directors and coordinators in Student Affairs
  • Academic Dean and Department Chair structure is not working
    • Department chairs not equipped for administrative duties; should be assigned to an administrator
    • Department Chair has no authority
    • Eliminate Co-Dean model
    • One Dean per Academic Division
    • Current structure confusing and ineffective
    • Role of Executive Dean unclear
  • Preference for a hybrid centralized model
    • One size does not fit all
    • Individuality of campuses; Central doesn’t understand campuses
    • There is value to central leadership roles
    • Budget should reflect organizational structure (e.g. centralized budget management)
    • Clarity in decision-making process (e.g. central vs. campus based decisions)
    • Sharing of resources/cross training
    • Location of central; too removed from stakeholders
    • Budgets should be Division-based not campus based
    • Clear lines of authority
    • Processing should take place at Central
    • Regionalize administrative levels at smaller campuses
  • Review of Workforce Development/non-credit training
    • Losing considerable amount of money
    • Better communication/collaboration between credit and non-credit
    • Should report to Provost
  • Professional development opportunities to develop visionary leaders at HACC
  • Academic Excellence – everything else should support this mission
  • Incorporate Virtual Campus into other campuses
  • Increase partnerships
    • Community
    • School Districts
    • Other colleges
  • Inclusion for all in decision-making processes
    • Smaller campuses are sometimes not heard
    • There is a competitive campus structure; not one College
    • Improve internal communication and customer service
  • Review Shared Governance
    • Needs to be clearly defined
    • Creates inefficiencies
    • Should mean having a voice and say in vision; not policy writing
    • Hinders growth
  • Marketing of HACC
    • Institutional name change
    • Current name is cumbersome, awkward and frankly not doing us any favors in our community or region as a “brand”
    • Susquehanna Valley Community College
    • Central Pennsylvania Community College
  • Other comments
    • Early retirement incentive for applicable administrators and faculty
    • Energy conservation
    • Review of programs – eliminate programs that are losing money
    • Increase role of adjuncts
    • Improve sharing of information; central repository
    • Improve availability of data and other resources College-wide
    • Too many meetings and committees
    • Decrease use of consultants; use resources that College already has
    • Hire more full-time faculty
    • Put growth on hold…begin to lift up, renew, reinforce and revitalize
    • Avoid nepotism
    • “Action-oriented” meetings vs. information only items, which should be shared outside of a meeting format
    • Consistent academic calendar across all campuses
    • 4-day work week and class schedule
