What is a CRN?

Each class offering of any course has its own unique identification number.

This is referred to as the CRN (or Course Reference Number). Typically, the CRN consists of 5 digits for Spring or Fall semesters and 4 digits for summer semesters.

For example, you might register for a fall section of an online Accounting 101 course which has a CRN of 20001.

Online Academy

The Virtual Campus has the overall mission of "... a complete, high quality educational experience that faculty and students would rate as exceptional and that other institutions would seek to model."

- Virtual Campus Planning Task Force, October 2003

HACC's Online Academy

The purpose of the Online Academy is to provide faculty with the training they need to be able to offer their classes online. The college has recognized the importance of this training, and it is included as a requirement for teaching online classes in Administrative Procedure 772, Virtual Campus. The Online Academy is newly redesigned in order to keep it current with the changes in online education, the College's conversion to Desire2Learn, and the needs of the Virtual Campus. The next offering of the Online Academy is currently scheduled for the Spring 2012 semester with applications being accepted starting November 4, 2011. The registration period will close on November 29, 2011.

Course Description

Online Academy is designed to meet the need for qualified online faculty by HACC's Virtual Campus as mandated in its mission statement. Online Academy is an intense online training program with a focus on the skills and pedagogy required to successfully develop and teach online courses based on the Virtual Campus Course Assessment Rubric. This is accomplished by placing the participant 'Faculty/Student', in a dual role as both prospective online teacher, and as an online student enrolled in a training course called Online Academy. These perspectives form an experiential foundation for the Faculty/Student to apply proven instructional principles to the course being developed, and to integrate them into the online electronic environment supported by HACC's Virtual Campus.

Faculty/Students will complete ten weeks of online training and show application of knowledge by preparing materials for their proposed online course. At the conclusion of Online Academy, faculty/students will be expected to have completed three chapters (units, elements, modules) of the course they are developing for online delivery. While Online Academy is required for teaching online classes at HACC (Administrative Procedure 772), and reasonable effort is made to accommodate graduates of Online Academy, enrollment and completion of Online Academy does not guarantee employment to teach online courses at HACC.
