What is Sustainability?
At Harrisburg Area Community College we define sustainability as "the ability of the earth's natural systems, human cultural systems, and economies to flourish from generation to generation“. We are committed to providing opportunities for students to expand their understanding of sustainability and the new green economy through education, training and community collaboration.
American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment
In 2009 Harrisburg Area Community College signed the American College & University President’s Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). That same year the College established a college-wide Sustainability Task Force (STF). Part of the Task Forces’ responsibilities is to inventory all of the anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on campus. To assist with the inventory, a program developed by Clean Air – Cool Planet (CA-CP) was used. All emissions are recorded in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (MTCOE). The global warming potential (GWP) of the individual gases is accounted for in the emissions, and the program is consistent with the guidelines established by the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC).
