Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Learn about Pennsylvania Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification program.

What does the program cover?

The EMT course covers:

  • The overall roles and responsibilities of the EMT
  • General anatomy and physiology
  • Assessment of injuries and illnesses
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Control of bleeding and shock
  • Care of muscle injuries
  • Medical emergencies
  • Childbirth
  • Pediatric emergencies
  • Environmental emergencies
  • The lifting and moving of patients
  • Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
  • The assisting of patients with their own prescribed medications
  • Assessment of the scene
  • Transportation of patients to the emergency department

How do I apply?

To register, please call 717-780-2510. We will not accept registrations less than 14 days before the program start date.

Students must be at least 16 years old.

Please be advised that the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Bureau of EMS conducts criminal background checks.

Having a criminal history may affect your ability to complete the required testing for certification. For more information, please call 717-780-1969.

How much does the program cost?

Tuition for the EMT program is $825.00.

It is the responsibility of the EMT student to obtain the required textbook for the EMT Program.

The required textbook is:

Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, 11th ed.

American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)

Jones and Bartlett Publishers, 2016

Students MUST have a textbook by the first class session.

Upon successful completion of the EMT Program students are eligible for their EMT certification exams. 

These exams are administered by the Pa. Department of Health–Bureau of EMS/National Registry of EMTs (Psychomotor) and the National Registry of EMTs/Pearson-Vue test centers (Cognitive).

Please note that there is a separate fee associated with the Cognitive exam ($75.00/attempt) that is paid to the National Registry of EMTs.

EMT Online/Blended

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program.

Our online/blended EMT program is a combination of self-paced online modules with interactive assignments and discussions.Students will be required to attend Saturday lab sessions throughout the program to demonstrate their competency in numerous psychomotor skills, complete testing requirements and prepare for the National Registry examinations.

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) bridge to Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program.

How do I apply?

*A copy of your current Pennsylvania Emergency Medical Responder card and CPR card must be submitted before the start of the program.

How much does the program cost?

Tuition for the program is $425.00.

It is the responsibility of the EMT Bridge student to obtain the required textbook for the EMT Program.
