Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)

Learn about Pennsylvania Department of Health Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Certification program

Who is this course for?

This course is for first responders at the scene of a trauma or medical emergency. Students must be at least 16 years old.

What does the course cover?

The course focuses on:

  • Understanding the EMS system
  • Providing immediate care of life threatening injuries or illnesses
  • Controlling the scene
  • Preparing for the arrival of the ambulance

We divide the program into seven sections. These include:

  1. Preparatory
  2. Airway
  3. Patient assessment
  4. Medical
  5. Trauma
  6. Special patient populations
  7. EMS operations

The EMR programs require mandatory corequisite courses listed below. The due dates for these courses are determined by your specific course syllabus and are to be completed in order to be eligible for your NREMT EMR certification exam. More information will be provided at the first class session.

NIMS IS-100.B: Introduction to Incident Command System

NIMS IS-700.A: National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction

NIMS IS-200.B: ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents (Prerequisites: NIMS 100 and 700)

Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse - 

How much does the program cost?

Tuition for the EMR program is $425.00. Students are responsible for obtaining the textbook.

The required textbook for this course is:

How do I register?

Register Online (Reference the Section Number as locations cannot be displayed on this link) or call 717-780-2414 to register. Payment is due at the time of registration.

Upon successful completion of the EMR Program students are eligible for their EMR certification exams. 

These exams are administered by the Pa. Department of Health–Bureau of EMS/National Registry of EMT's (Psychomotor) and the National Registry of EMTs/Pearson-Vue test centers (Cognitive).

Please note that there is a separate fee associated with the Cognitive exam ($75.00/attempt) that is paid to the National Registry of EMTs.
