Transportation and Logistics

What does the program offer?

If you want to drive a Class "A" —Tractor Trailer —or Class "B" —Straight Truck over 26,001 lbs. GVW —you will need a special license. This full-time program will cover the entire CDL license process. This includes preparation for your permit test and fine-tuning your skills after you pass the state CDL examination.

 

When is the program?

Our program runs Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. -5:30 p.m. for six weeks (or two weeks for class "B"). 

 

What is included in the program cost?

Cost includes books, drug and alcohol testing, ICC (DOT) physical and your CDL test.

You will need to pay for other clearances, including Pennsylvania-required permit(s), endorsements, criminal background checks (required for aHazardousMaterial endorsement).

 

What does the program cover?

Primary CDL training program areas include:

  • Preparation for CDL Learner's Permit Test
  • Explanations of CDL Responsibilities —Security of cargo handling and documents, hours of service, hazardous materials
  • Orientation to CDL Basic Systems and Inspections —Control systems, vehicle systems and inspections
  • Fundamentals of Truck Driving Basics —Shifting, backing coupling, uncoupling
  • Actual Driving Skills —Speed and space management, night driving, railroad crossings, hazard perceptions
  • Advanced Driving Skills —Extreme driving conditions, emergency maneuvers, skid control and recovery, special rigs
  • Personal Health and Safety —Diagnosing and reporting malfunctions, trip planning, accident procedures.

Students must schedule a visit with the CDL staff prior to attending the program.

CDL Class "A" Truck Training

  • Cost: $5,100 (includes textbook, hazmat training, DOT physical, drug testing, preparation for permit testing and the CDL test)

Refresher and upgrade training

The CDL refresher/upgrade driver training is for experienced Class "A" CDL drivers who haven't driven for a while. This program also trains experienced Class "B" drivers who want to upgrade their license to Class "A."

You must schedule a visit with the CDL staff before attending the program.  


Refresher/upgrade to class "A" truck training

  • Cost: $2,100 (includes hazmat training, DOT physical, drug testing and the CDL test)

CDL manual shifting

This program is designed for commercially permitted drivers who have little or no experience shifting a non-synchronized transmission. You will spend personalized time with a driver coach to perfect your shifting skills.

You must possess a valid CDL or appropriate permits. You also need a current ICC (DOT) physical prior to enrollment.

Third-party testing

HACC's Transportation and Logistics program is a licensed Third-Party Testing Site for Class A, B, and C (including passenger and school bus) for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

  • Cost: $75 per hour for testing, including equipment, or $85 per hour if using HACC's equipment
  • Testing is available to the public by appointment only

Personalized CDL contract training (tutoring)

This program is a hands-on course that will give you the skills and knowledge needed for entry-level employment.

  • Cost: $75 per hour for testing, including equipment, or $85 per hour if using HACC's equipment
  • Testing is available to the public by appointment only

CDL for diesel mechanics training

This program is a hands-on course to help you gain entry-level employment when the CDL is a secondary requirement, such as a CDL inspector or mechanics.

  • Cost: $1,300
  • 20-hour program

 

Transportation & logistics contracted programs

HACC partners with diverse, regional businesses to bring customized and affordable training to your transportation and logistics operation. Experienced professionals lead this training.

Our instructors work with you to identify unique workforce safety and training challenges. We then customize a plan to address those needs.

Training is delivered at HACC's Shumaker Public Safety Center at your requested location. We can develop a schedule designed to minimize impact on your company.

Train-the-trainer accident reduction program

This program teaches trainers how to improve their safety awareness training. It is custom-designed to reduce accidents by investigating trends and occurrences.

The goal is to reduce the number of accidents. We achieve this by customizing training to address specific situations at your company. We inform drivers and trainers of specific trends. We also cover a variety of general rules and the practice of specific driving techniques.

 

Defensive driving for all vehicles

This course is for all drivers who want to improve their defensive-driving skills, including general motorists, recreational vehicle drivers and senior citizens. It is ideal for small fleets with drivers who need to complete periodic defensive driving training.

  • Cost: $60 per driver
  • Four-hour course, taught twice a month
  • A minimum of five students is required, with a maximum of 20 drivers per course

Parent/teen defensive driving

The goal of this course is to increase teen-driver safety and reduce crashes by teaching defensive-driving skills. An average class size is 15 family units.

  • Cost: $100 per family
  • Four-hour course
