Certified Production Technician Certificate: Non-Credit (0017)

This 120-hour program is designed to develop individuals for entry-level positions in a production environment. Basic skills include safety, math and measuring, blueprint reading, and basic job skills. This certificate program covers topics in safety, quality practices, measurements, manufacturing processes and production, and maintenance awareness. This training combines lectures with Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) online training to prepare students for the certification administered by MSSC.

Production Technicians need to be able to comprehend and perform tasks based upon setup or job sheets, blueprints, or quality assurance drawings. The technician must have a mechanical aptitude and have the manual dexterity to perform various production tasks using basic hand and specific power tools. The technician must also have the ability and desire to work to specifications and tolerances designed to produce a quality product.

This program is setup to provide a wide range of portable skills for the student as it it not specific to one industry but can be tailored to fit current economic conditions and hiring opportunities. When applicable, the student is given the opportunity to sit for industry recognized and national certification exams. The program is available at the Harrisburg and York campuses.

Careers for the production technician can include Machine Operator, Packaging Machine Operator, Assembly-Line Worker, or Assembly Machine Operator.  Entry-level production technician positions are often used as the starting point for a new employee to advance within the company.

The curriculum is designed to prepare the student to:

  • Define the importance of manufacturing
  • Display the basic computer skills needed to complete online training and search for information
  • Define and demonstrate safe work habits
  • Display proper use of hand and power tools
  • Interpret basic mechanical blueprints
  • Properly measure mechanical components using various measuring instruments
  • Describe quality procedures and interpret tolerances and dimensions
