Transportation and Logistics

CDL Driving Certification Program

Truck Driving is one of the top five employers in the State of Pennsylvania. However, driving a Class “A” (Tractor Trailer) or Class “B” (Straight Truck over 26,001 lbs. GVW) requires a special license.  This full time program will take you through all of the processes to obtain your CDL license from preparation for your permit test to fine tuning your skills after you pass the state CDL examination.  This full time program is run Monday through Thursday 7:30 am-5:30 pm for 6 weeks (2 weeks for class “B”).  This cost includes text books, drug and alcohol testing, ICC (DOT) physical and your CDL test.

Students will be required to pay for their Pennsylvania required permit(s), endorsements, criminal background checks (required for a Hazardous Material endorsement), etc.

Primary CDL training Program Areas:
  • Preparation for CDL learner’s permit test
  • Explanations of CDL responsibilities- security of cargo handling and documents, hours of service, hazardous materials
  • Orientation to CDL Basic Systems, and Inspections- Control Systems, vehicle systems and Inspections
  • Fundamentals of Truck Driving Basics- shifting, backing coupling, uncoupling
  • Actual Driving Skills- speed and space management, night driving, railroad crossings, Hazard perceptions
  • Advanced Driving Skills-Extreme driving conditions, emergency maneuvers, skid control and recovery, special rigs
  • Personal Health and Safety-Diagnosing and reporting malfunctions, trip planning, accident procedures

CDL Class "A" Truck Training
Cost:  $5,100 (includes textbook, hazmat training, DOT physical, drug testing, preparation for permit testing and the CDL test)

Refresher/Upgrade Training

HACC also offers CDL refresher/upgrade driver training for experienced Class “A” CDL drivers who haven’t driven a Class “A” vehicle within a period of time. This program also provides training for experienced Class “B” drivers to upgrade their license to a Class “A” license. This 40-hour program costs $2,100.

Refresher/Upgrade to Class "A" Truck Training
Cost:  $2,100 (includes hazmat training, DOT physical, drug testing and the CDL test)

CDL Manual Shifting

This program is designed to give commercially permitted drivers, who have little or no experience shifting a non-synchronized transmission, the opportunity to spend personalized time with a driver coach to perfect their shifting skills. Students must possess a valid CDL or appropriate permits and a current ICC (DOT) physical prior to enrollment.

Third Party Testing is now available at HACC

HACC’s Transportation and Logistics program is a licensed Third Party Testing Site for Class A, B, and C (including passenger and school bus) for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Testing is available to the public by appointment only. The cost for testing with your equipment will be $75/hour. If using HACC’s equipment, the cost will be $85/hour. For more information or to set up an appointment, call (717) 221-1357 or email tjsanden@hacc.edu.

 

Personalized CDL Contract Training (Tutoring)

This program is a hands on course designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to gain entry-level employment. The cost for the tutoring with your equipment will be $75/hour. CDL for Diesel Mechanics Training


This program is a hands on course designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to gain entry-level employment, where their CDL is a secondary requirement, such as a CDL inspector, or mechanics. This 20-hour program costs $1,300.



Transportation & Logistics Contracted Programs

HACC partners with diverse businesses in the region to bring customized, affordable training delivered by experienced professionals to meet the needs of an efficient, well-run transportation and logistics operation. HACC’s experienced, professional instructors work with clients to identify their unique workforce safety and training challenges, then customize a plan to address those needs. Training is delivered at HACC’s Shumaker Public Safety Center or on location with a schedule designed to minimize impact on your company.

 

Train-the-Trainer Accident Reduction Program

This program is designed to train-the-trainers to possess the knowledge and skills needed to improve their training in safety awareness. This program is custom designed to accommodate the necessary information to reduce accidents by investigating trends and occurrences. The outcome is to reduce the number of accidents by focusing on the specific trends and occurrences and then customizing the training to address the unique situations involved in the company’s culture. This outcome is achieved through informing the drivers and trainers of specific trends, as well as the necessity of adherence to a variety of general rules and the practice of specific driving techniques.

 

Defensive Driving – for all vehicles

This four-hour course will be taught by HACC’s qualified instructors twice a month. It is for all drivers who want to improve their defensive driving skills, including the general motorist, recreational vehicle drivers and senior citizens. This program also is appropriate for small fleets who want to send their drivers to a required periodic defensive driving training. Class size will be a minimum of five students and a maximum of 20 drivers per course. The cost is $60 per driver.

Parent/Teen Defensive Driving

The goal of this four-hour course is to increase driver safety and reduce crashes by giving both a common language and tools to communicate and understand defensive driving. An average class size will be 15 family units. The cost is $100 per family (unit).
