Description of Occupation - The program enhances the skills of those working with the aging client and gives them more areas of competence in the workplace. The curriculum is designed to develop sensitivity and competence for those in allied health fields who work with the aging population and have their nursing assistant certificate. The course content will introduce aspects of gerontology, allied health, social services, mental health, psychosocial issues of aging as well as basic math and English skills as they relate to the workplace. Also included is a service learning experience (see additional information) with two hours of weekly volunteering with a senior resident. In some cases, the program can be customized to include specialized coursework for individuals in facilities.
Individuals assisting and caring for the aging population should have characteristics of patience, compassion, empathy, sense of humor and sensitivity to the aging process.
A wide variety of occupations are related to the Senior Health Care Diploma – Academic/Activity Professional. Graduates will possess specialized knowledge in gerontology, allied health, social services, mental health and psychosocial aspects of aging.
Program Entry Requirements - For credit students: Application to college and appointment with coordinator of program. Willingness to participate in volunteer service learning experience for a ten-week period (2hrs/week) for one semester. Additionally, submission of a Criminal Background Check and/or Child Abuse Clearance may be required for employment. Students may also take this program as noncredit (and not need to complete a college application).
Length of Program and College Degree Conferred - Taken as a credit program - 16 or 17 credits with possibility of completion within one year depending on course offerings. Completion time can vary depending on a candidate's background and coursework and the student's rate of study. It is an evening program at Lebanon and Lancaster campuses.
Places of Employment and Outlook - According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 43% of adults will be 50 or older by 2010, Pennsylvania having the second largest percentage of seniors in the nation. With this demographic change, the need for well-trained health care and social service providers for the aging population will continue to grow dramatically throughout the 21st century. Educational Advancement - Some coursework from this diploma can be applied to other degrees at HACC. Graduates may pursue further study or enhance current training/certifications in areas such as nurse aide, home health aide, registered nurse or social service worker/activity professional.
