Classroom instruction includes the following:
Anatomy and Physiology, Kinesiology, Pathology; Communication/Awareness/Ethics; Business Practices; and CPR.
The hands-on instruction includes the following massage modalities:
Swedish Massage - a popular form of massage in health clubs, spas and resorts, Swedish Massage employs the traditional strokes of effleurage (gliding), petrissage (kneading), vibration, friction, tapotement (tapping) and joint movements. A Swedish massage is most often performed with the receiver lying on a massage table and the strokes are applied on the skin using lotion or oil.
Reflexology - a form of bodywork based on the theory of zone therapy in which specific reflex points on the surface of the body are pressed to stimulate other areas or organs of the body. It is usually performed on the feet and can be all or part of a bodywork session.
Neuromuscular Therapy - a system of soft tissue assessment and manipulation focused on deactivating myofacial trigger points. These points are small hyperirritable spots in muscle or related connective tissue that frequently cause pain.
Connective Tissue Therapy - a focused, precise form of bodywork performed with the intent of working directly with the fascia, the body’s organ of support which encapsulates each muscle. This class includes assessment and body reading.
Sports Massage - a method of applying massage and related techniques to ensure the health and well-being of the athlete and to enhance athletic performance. It can be used to prepare an athlete for competition and/or help in recovery and maintenance of optimal condition.
Seated/Chair Massage takes place in a massage chair with the receiver fully clothed. Chair massage can now been seen at airports, malls, and conventions. Many corporations are utilizing on-site chair massage as part of their employee wellness programs.
Hot Stone Massage, Spa Treatments and Aromatherapy - students learn hot stone massage and are introduced to a variety of spa treatments including paraffin dips and salt scrubs as well as ways to incorporate essential oils and aromatherapy into a massage therapy session.
Student Clinic - all students are required to complete at least 50 supervised massages in the student clinic outside class hours.
