EMS Academy 2010 - $900
The 2010 HACC EMS Academy applications were due Feb 22. This program has been developed through a collaborative effort of regional educators, regulatory agencies and prospective employers to ensure the highest level of training for potential Emergency Medical Service providers for successful entry into the field. Students do not need prior knowledge of Emergency Medical Services. Upon successful completion of the program, academy graduates will have obtained the following:
- Pennsylvania Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician certification
- Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVDT)
- International Trauma Life Support (ITLS)
- Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP)
- Hazardous Materials Operations (IAFF) Pediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for the EMT-Basic (EMT-B)
- National Incident Management System components (Overview, IS 100, IS 200 and IS 700)
Additional training will be provided in vehicle extrication and rescue practices. Academy cadets will be required to spend a minimum of 200 hours in clinical rotations at various EMS agencies where they will be expected to function as a member of an EMS crew.
This concentrated program consists of 450 hours of training. Attendance at all classes and completion of clinical rotation time is mandatory for successful completion of the academy.
Admission Requirements (This is a noncredit program.)
- All applicants must be at least 18 years of age on the first day of class.
- All candidates must apply for admission to the academy.
- Proof of high school diploma or successful completion of GED is required.
- Cadets must be able to fulfill the functional position description for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) which includes, but is not limited to, the ability to lift, carry and balance a minimum of 125 pounds equally distributed (250 pounds with assistance), a height of 33 inches, a distance of 10 feet.
- Candidates must demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skills, with ability to perform all tasks related to quality patient care including the capability to bend, stoop, crawl and walk on uneven surfaces.
- A Pennsylvania State Police Criminal record check and Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare Child Abuse History Clearance is also required with application to the Academy.
Tuition includes textbooks, uniform shirt, stethoscope and pocket mask. Applications and interviews for admission into the program will be reviewed by the Academy Board. Application and interview does not guarantee acceptance into the program.
