Description of Occupation - Diagnostic medical sonographers use specialized equipment to direct high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) into areas of the patient's body including abdomen, obstetrics, gynecology, small parts, neonatal, vascular, trauma, intra-operative and invasive procedures. Sonographers operate the equipment which collects reflected echoes and produces visual images of organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body. These images are transmitted for interpretation and a diagnosis by a physician. Sonographers may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and potentially hazardous materials.

Sonographers are individuals who are a dedicated part of the health care team. They must have a technical aptitude to be able to use diagnostic equipment. Qualities of a high level of responsibility and analytical capabilities are essential to this career. Sonographers must have excellent communication skills in order to interact with patients, co-workers and physicians. A commitment to providing the highest level of patient care is a prerequisite for sonographers.

Places of Employment and Outlook
Employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2012. Nationally there is a need for DMS professionals. There may not be enough openings for all graduates in the central Pennsylvania area, so some may need to leave the area to gain employment.

More than half of all sonographers are employed by hospitals, and most of the remainder work in physicians' offices and clinics, including diagnostic imaging centers.

Salary Range for Geographical Area
$54,000 median salary in Pennsylvania 2007

Educational Advancement
Students may pursue a bachelor's degree or specialize. Franklin University offers a BS in Healthcare Management and Shippensburg University offers a BS in Healthcare Administration. Immaculata University offers an accelerated BA in Health Care Management (classes in accelerated format and held at HACC's Lancaster Campus).
