Legal Studies

Welcome to the Legal Studies Department. Legal Studies consists of two disciplines: Paralegal Studies and Criminal Justice.
The Paralegal Studies Program is a HACC Career Program and is approved by the American Bar Association. It is designed to prepare students to work in private, government, and corporate law offices under the supervision of an attorney. Paralegal courses are offered ONLY at the Harrisburg and Lancaster campuses, where complete Pennsylvania law libraries are housed; however, general education/core courses can be taken at any campus or online. Paralegal courses are taught by full-time and adjunct faculty members who have at least two years of practical experience in the area taught. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to conduct client interviews and legal research, write legal memoranda and briefs, perform administrative tasks in the law office, and prepare legal documents related to litigation, estates, bankruptcy, real estate, and domestic relations. PARALEGALS MAY NOT PROVIDE LEGAL SERVICES TO THE PUBLIC, EXCEPT AS PERMITTED BY LAW.

The Criminal Justice Program is designed for students seeking careers in law enforcement, correctional rehabilitation, juvenile and adult probation/parole, private security and investigations, military police, and criminology. THIS PROGRAM MAY REQUIRE THE STUDENT TO SUBMIT TO ACT 33 CHILD ABUSE AND/OR ACT 34 PENNSYLVANIA STATE POLICE CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS PRIOR TO ENROLLMENT. The program includes associate degree programs in Criminal Justice and in Police Science as well as certificate programs in Security Administration, Police Science, and Corrections. Some Police Science courses are offered ONLY at the Harrisburg Campus. The associate degree in criminal justice is designed as a transfer program. SINCE THE REQUIREMENTS OF TRANSFER INSTITUTIONS VARY WIDELY, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO CHOOSE AN INTENDED TRANSFER INSTITUTION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND CAREFULLY FOLLOW THE PROGRAM DESCRIBED IN THE TRANSFER CHECKSHEET.
