HACC names Dr. John J. “Ski” Sygielski as new president
HACC has named a community college president from Oregon as its new leader. Dr. John J. “Ski” Sygielski is slated to take over the leadership of HACC this summer.
Sygielski, a native of Ohio, is currently president of Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC), a multi-campus community college based in the Portland, OR, area. He is also chairman of the board of the American Asociation of Community Colleges (AACC) – the national association representing the nation’s nearly 1,200 community colleges. At HACC, Sygielski will replace Dr. Edna V. Baehre, who left to take a similar job in Napa, Calif. More
Alumni sponsor Mexican pottery exhibit
HACC alumni are invited to visit the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on the Harrisburg Campus between January 12 and February 4 to view a unique collection of pottery from the Mexican village of Mata Ortiz. The “Mata Ortiz Pottery in the Casas
Grandes Tradition” exhibit is sponsored by your HACC Alumni Association.
Pottery pieces from the collection of Carl and Holly Socolow of Camp Hill, as well as Carl Socolow’s photographs of the village will be on display as part of the exhibit. In addition, on Thursday, January 20, alumni are invited to attend three free events at the Harrisburg Campus that complement the exhibit:
- Jerardo Tena, one of the potters of Mata Ortiz, presents a free demonstration from 2-4 p.m. in the Rose Lehrman Arts Center, room 126A. Tena is HACC’s artist-in-residence from January 18-22, working with HACC faculty in the Art Department and sharing his expertise with students.
- Carl Socolow and Tena will discuss the culture of Mata Ortiz and pottery making at a lecture from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Whitaker Hall, room 214.
- A reception follows the lecture from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Art Gallery. More
Your gifts in action

In August, these students pictured above received 2010-11 Alumni Association Scholarships because of their excellent academic achievement and contributions to their communities. Gifts from HACC alumni made these scholarships possible. Your donations also enabled your Alumni Association to:
- Provide $15,000 for the HACC-Lancaster Campus’ Scholarship Campaign;
- Contribute $10,000 to the HACC-Gettysburg Campus’ Share the Vision, Shape the Future campaign;
- Support the HACC-York Campus’ Access and Opportunity Scholarship Fund with a $10,000 gift;
- Pledge $10,000 to expand and upgrade the Senator John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center located on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus.
These are your gifts in action! Please help us continue our longstanding tradition of helping tomorrow’s leaders—our students—today by giving to the 2011 Annual Alumni Appeal. You can make your tax-deductible gift right now by giving online via our secure Web site. Your generosity helps HACC’s students become remarkable alumni who achieve great things in Central Pennsylvania! Thank you.
Become an Alumni Ambassador
Do you want give back to HACC by representing the college on campus and in the community? Would you like to work hand-in-hand with HACC students to show your HACC pride and advocate for your alma mater? Then join us on Thursday, March 24, at the Cooper Student Center on the Harrisburg Campus for a 5:30 p.m. reception to learn more about HACC’s Alumni Ambassador Program.
This spring the Harrisburg Campus’ Student Affairs Division, Admissions Office, and the HACC Office of Alumni Affairs are piloting this leadership program which seeks to foster personal growth among our student leaders, stimulate a sense of HACC pride, and promote the college in the community and to prospective HACC students. We are seeking alumni volunteers to participate in this program and work cooperatively with students who are already involved in the HACC Campus Ambassador Program. More
Spend a day with a HACC student
Give a HACC student a firsthand look at your chosen career by participating in HACC’s job shadowing program. The HACC Alumni Affairs Office and Career Services Center are seeking alumni volunteers willing to host HACC students for short visits to their workplace.
Under the job shadowing program, a student spends either a half- or full-day observing and talking with you and other professionals at your job site. The student benefits from receiving a “real-world” experience in a field that he or she may be interested in pursuing, and you help the student better understand the skills and education needed to be successful in your career.
